Dougos Winery

1991 was the starting point for Dimitrios Dougos’ family to enter the Greek wine world. It was the start of a fascinating journey of planting vineyards and producing fine wines. Thanos and Louisa Dougos joined the family business along the way, the former an agronomist, the latter a chemist-oenologist, sharing their father’s passion and drive for improving quality while respecting the protection of the environment and safeguarding the good health of the consumer, through organic cultivation of the vines.

The winery is located at the foot of Mount Olympus, in the enchanting Tempi Valley, on a vineyard of 0.8 hectares, where 29 varieties are cultivated. The winery, built in the traditional architectural style and equipped with modern production infrastructure, is where modern winemaking techniques are combined with tradition and respect for the environment. Cool breezes waft through the area rich in history and with views of Mount Olympus, Mount Kissavos with Ambelakia, and the Pineios River. The winery is 500 square meters, with a 250 square meter underground state-of-the art cellar, where red wines patiently age in French and American oak barrels. The winery is open to visitors by appointment.

The vineyards extend to Prosilia and Turtoura Rapsanis, at an altitude of about 450-650 meters on the southeastern slopes of Mount Olympus. The soil consists mainly of iron-rich slate. Iron in the soil is an important factor, as it regulates its water absorption capacity. The soil is poor in organic matter. Its structure allows the roots to penetrate deep underground so that the vineyard does not suffer from a lack of moisture during the summer. The subsoil is sandy loam. The crop cultivation is dry and organic, so the yield per hectare does not exceed 5000-8000 kilos. The vineyards include the Greek varieties Xinomavro, Krasato, Stavroto, Limniona, Roditis, Assyrtiko and the French Syrah and Grenache rouge.
